Mathieu Amalric is a French actor and film director. He was born in a suburb of Paris called Neuilly-sur-Seine. This is one of the many suburbs of Paris; it is located 4.2 miles west of the city and has approximately 60,000 residents. It is well known for being a wealthy, rich suburb of France. His mother was born into a Jewish family that lived in Poland, they then moved to France before World War II.
Amalric is best known in the United States for his role in James Bond Quantum of Solace. In this movie he plays the antagonist to Daniel Craig. He is known throughout France as an excellent director and actor because of his several movies and awards. The first movie, My Sex Life…or How I Got Into an Argument, is a French drama film that won a Cesar award for most promising actor where Mathieu Amalric was the main actor. In this film he plays a man in love who wants to be a doctor, yet has tough decisions to make about his future. Then he won two awards for the film Kings and Queens, where he plays a person living in a mentally ill facility. The story is about his ex-wife whose father is dying, and she wants Amalric’s character to get back together with her so their son can have a father. In this film Mathieu Amalric won a Cesar award for best actor and he won a Lumiere award for best actor. The film was nominated for a Cesar award for best film, best supporting actor, best director, best actress, most promising actress, and best writing. The next film is called The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. For this film he won an étoiles d’or award for best actor and a cesar award for best actor. In this film he plays a character that had a stroke and is now paralyzed from neck down with a condition called locked-in syndrome. In the film Munich he won the award runner-up for best supporting actor. In this movie he acted with Daniel Craig and then later acted in the James Bond film. Finally, his own film, On Tour, which he directed, he won an award for best director. This movie is a comedy directed by Amalric in which he stars as a producer who brings an American burlesque group to France.
Amalric is a cultural icon in France because of his influence on French filmography.
